Performance Pay for Teachers?

When we have surgery, do we expect to pay the surgeon more for being competent? No. We expect competence. An incompetent surgeon should not be doing surgery. Likewise, an incompetent teacher should not be teaching.

The Senate proposal to pay teachers for performance will not increase competence. But it will increase resentment among teachers. It will also encourage teachers to be more "popular" with students, parents and administrators, i.e., it will make them more political.

Good teachers are already doing their best. Pay them fairly. Surround them with more good teachers. Show them that we appreciate their efforts and their achievements. But don't turn them into politicians.
